While many HVAC firms boast expertise, they can be costly, and do not want to share their knowledge or have difficulty communicating it. However, Saad at MSH Engineers was not only very knowledgeable and affordable, he also took the time to patiently answer all of our inquiries, no matter how trivial. He was able to highlight issues we had overlooked, and he generously proposed innovative solutions even before signing on with him. Without hesitation, I would easily recommend MSH Engineers and hope to work with them in the future.Posted on Google![]()

Our Fire Protection Design Services
Standpipe System Design
Standpipe systems supply water to hose connections throughout a building so firefighters can fight fire on upper floors without running hose from the street. Ontario building requirements assign standpipes to one of three classes. Class I standpipes serve fire department use with 2.5-inch hose connections. Class II standpipes are sized for occupant use with 1.5-inch hose stations. Class III standpipes combine both, giving trained staff and fire crews access to the same system.
MSH Engineers designs standpipe systems for mid-rise and high-rise buildings, parking structures, and large commercial projects across Ontario, sizing pipe, pumps, and hose connections to meet NFPA 14 and local fire department requirements.
Water-Based Fire Protection Design
Water-based fire protection design covers everything that moves and controls water for suppression: sprinkler piping, standpipes, fire pumps, and the water supply that feeds them. Our engineers calculate hydraulic demand and confirm municipal water supply is adequate for the proposed system before drawings go to permit review. Where supply falls short, fire pump design (below) makes up the difference.
This work is coordinated with sprinkler design and standpipe design so the building’s full water-based fire protection strategy is engineered as one system rather than separate trades working in isolation.
Fire Pump Design and Testing
When municipal water pressure isn’t enough to meet the hydraulic demand of a suppression or standpipe system, we design a fire pump to make up the difference. Electric and diesel-driven fire pumps are sized against the system’s required flow and pressure, then paired with a jockey pump that holds line pressure between fire events so the main pump doesn’t cycle unnecessarily.
Fire pump installations in Ontario require acceptance testing before occupancy, confirming the pump delivers rated flow and pressure under load. Our engineers prepare the pump room layout, electrical and mechanical coordination drawings, and the documentation a plan reviewer needs to sign off on the installation.
Fire Protection Design Process
Our fire protection design process moves through five stages, from initial site review to a permit-ready package:
- Site and building assessment: reviewing occupancy classification, hazard level, and existing water supply.
- Hydraulic calculations: sizing pipe, sprinkler heads, and any required fire pump to meet the demand.
- Drawing production: suppression, standpipe, and fire pump layouts prepared to NFPA and Ontario Fire Code requirements.
- Professional Engineer stamp: drawings reviewed and stamped before submission.
- Permit coordination: drawings submitted alongside the rest of the building permit package, with revisions handled directly with the plan reviewer.

Frequently Asked Question
What is the difference between a wet-pipe and dry-pipe fire suppression system?
A wet-pipe system keeps water in the piping at all times and discharges immediately when a sprinkler head activates. A dry-pipe system holds pressurized air in the piping instead of water, so it releases water only after the air pressure drops, which makes it suitable for unheated spaces where pipes could freeze.
Do I need a standpipe system for my building in Ontario?
Standpipe requirements in Ontario depend on building height, occupancy, and floor area under the Ontario Building Code. Most mid-rise and high-rise buildings, along with large parking structures, require a standpipe system. Our engineers can confirm whether your building triggers the requirement.
What is water-based fire protection design?
Water-based fire protection design covers the sprinkler piping, standpipes, fire pumps, and water supply that work together to suppress fire, including the hydraulic calculations that confirm the system delivers enough water pressure and flow to meet code.
How long does fire protection design take for an Ontario building permit?
MSH Engineers typically completes fire protection design drawings within one week, compared to the three to four weeks common among other consultants. Timelines can extend for larger or more complex buildings.
Does MSH Engineers provide stamped fire protection drawings for permit submission?
Yes. All fire protection drawings are prepared and stamped by a licensed Professional Engineer, ready for submission to the local building department.
